GREAT WHITE SHARK (4.2 m)

Carcharodon carcharias

FINN IS A FEMALE POINTER IDENTIFIED AT THE SOUTH NEPTUNE ISLAND. I CAPTURED THIS IMAGE OF HER WHILE WORKING ABOARD THE MV RODNEY FOX DURING MY LUNCH BREAK, CURING MY TENURE AS A SAFETY DIVER/CAGE CAPTAIN.

GLASS SHRIMP

Genus Palaemon

A VARIETY OF SHRIMPS CAN BE FOUND IN THE BAY AROUND THE EYRE PENINSULA. THEY CAN OFTEN BE SEEN AROUND JETTIES, UNDER BOATS, OR HIDING IN SEAGRASSES (AS SEEN HERE). THEIR TRANSLUCENT BODIES ARE GREAT FOR OBSERVING THE INNER-WORKINGS OF THEIR BIOLOGY.

AUSTRALIAN SEA LION

Neophoca Cinerea

THESE CURIOUS AND PLAYFUL PUPS CAN BE FOUND AT VARIOUS “HAUL-OUT ZONES” ON ISLANDS AROUND THE EYRE PENINSULA. THESE AREAS ARE SEPERATE FROM THE BREEDING COLONIES, AND ARE A SAFE PLACE FOR THESE ENDANGERED CREATURES TO RELAX AND SOCIALIZE.

LEAFY SEA DRAGON (40 CM)

Phycodurus Eques

THE POPULATION OF LEAFIES IN TUMBY BAY IS RELATIVELY UNKNOWN. THE NUMBER OF SIGHTINGS IN 2023 THAT I’VE RECORDED HAS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED COMPARED TO YEARS PAST. THIS COULD BE DUE TO A VARIETY OF FACTORS, SUCH AS ILLEGAL POACHING PRACTICES AND STORM ACTIVITY.

SHORTHEAD SEAHORSE (3CM)

Hippocampus Breviceps

THESE MASTERS OF CAMOUFLAGE ARE INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO SPOT IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT, AND ARE MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE TO LOOK FOR WHILE DIVING.
