Artists Brenton Bailey (Coffin Bay) and Karl James (Whyalla) have collaborated to present the exhibition ‘Telling Stories’ for this years South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) in our Walter Nicholls Gallery. The exhibition runs from 17th August to 24th September 2021.
The works of Karl James in this exhibition are side glances, fleeting glimpses into the imaginary, postcards from dreams half remembered. They are narratives taken from between the lines of fairy tales. Images rendered from a peek into the other. They are your stories cobbled together from books read or movies seen or tales told; stories that morph from viewer to viewer, dreamer to dreamer. Like dreams they have no start or end but just seem to open and wander somewhere in the middle. Take some time with them; let them whisper a secret or two then read them as you will.
These works are a wonderful foil juxtaposed with the beautifully rendered almost reportage images of Brenton Bailey who’s work seeks to narrate the real. Stories from the world of Australia’s military both past and present sourced from the sights and sounds tethered to his memories. They are explorations into an often brutal landscape of overwhelming mental trauma, moral injuries and human injustices. Images of empathy and awareness rendered with materials and objects layered together to produce pathways between conceptual ideas and visual presentation.
